Sally takes part in a different charity bike ride from Nottingham to Liverpool.
It is called the ‘NottPool’ bike ride.
The total distance of the bike ride is 134 kilometres.
The bike ride has 8 equal stages.
Sally injures her leg during the bike ride and has to stop.
She completes 72 000 metres of the bike ride.
Sally is sponsored by two different companies.

    Cycles.. R.. Us
    £255 per stage
    completed

    Health Food Shop
    £15 per kilometre
    completed

Which company will give Sally the most sponsor money?

I need help working this out. So far I got 134/8 = 16.75.

What is the meaning of the number that you got? You need to understand what you are doing before proceeding.

I got that by finding out the km per stage so I divided it by 8 but I don't no where to go from there

Okay, so, one stage is 16.75 km, right? Ideally, you should have put:

    Distance per stage = 134/8 = 16.75 km

Cycles R Us gives £255 per stage
How many stages did Sally cover within her 72,000 km ride?
From the number of stages, can you work out the money she would get from Cycles R Us?

Health Food Shop gives £15 per kilometre.
Sally covered 72,000 km. How much money does she get?

Finally, from whom does Sally get the most money?

Sally ran 72 000 metres. Would I have to convert that into km which would be 72 km.

Right. I made a typo above by putting km instead of m. Sorry about that. :o

Can you do this part first?

Cycles R Us gives £255 per stage
How many stages did Sally cover within her 72,000 m ride?
    Remember; 1 stage = 16.75 km

Do I have to convert it into km first to work it out that is the part I am connfused on, or do I just divide 16.75 from 72 000

Make a picture to make it easier:

    Code:

      16.75
    |-------|-------|-------|-------|-------|-------|-------|-------|
    0      1      2      3      4      5      6      7      8
    |----------------------------------|
                    72 km

Does the picture make sense to you? The first line shows the stages. The second line shows the progress of Sally until she has to stop.

    so sally completed 4 stages. So 255 x 4 = 1020.
so she received £1020 from cycles r us. Is that correct?

    How did you get 4?

The diagram above is not necessarily to scale.

This is confusing me. I got 4 because I thought I had to work out how many stages she completed. She completed just abit over 4 stages. I'm so confused

Show all your calculations please. I want to be sure you know how you got 4, or the little bit over 4.

I did 72km/16.75km =4.2985075. That's what I got to see how many stages she completed

Okay, good. I hope you understand why you did it like this.

Do you think that Cycles R Us will pay Sally for the 0.2985075 she covered after the 4 first stages? Think about an achievement system. You reward for each stage completed, right?
  • Sep 1, 2012, 10:57 AM
    Nargis786
The 0.2985075 wasn't a full stage completed so I don't think they will pay her for that because it says '£255 per stage completed'. Am I right

    Unknown008
    Yes.

You can put yourself in the shoes of Cycles R Us. You are expecting Sally to complete stages. Unless the stage is completed, you wouldn't pay her, right?

Okay, can you work out how much money Sally will get from Cycles R Us now?
  • Sep 1, 2012, 11:01 AM
    Nargis786
since cycles r us pay £255 per stage completed, and she only completed 4. so 255 x 4 gives me 1020. So she received £1020?

    Unknown008
    Correct!

Well, almost. The correct wording is "She will receive £1020 from Cycles R Us". :)

Can you work out the amount Sally gets from Health Food Shop?
  • Sep 1, 2012, 11:04 AM
    Nargis786
from the health food shop I got £15x72km = £1080.

    Great! :)

Can you tell which one will give her the most money from the results you obtained?
