Just wondering... I have a bad reference... I trusted him as an uncle I worked for and found out he is not the best reference! I want to delete him off my resume and replace him with someone else! If at a interview they ask me what I did from 2010-2011 since that was when I was helping him how should I respond?? Or should I keep him on my resume and wonder if they will ask me why he is not my reference. How should I handle the situation?

You don't put references on your resume. They go on a separate sheet.

To avoid using him and your time with him, revise your resume from chronological to functional/skills based.

Yes I do put references on a separate sheet. But I also included his name, the job, on my resume! I have Experience on my resume that's the column he's under. Justy thought I would switch him out with someone else just don't want to be questioned about it on an interview!

Sounds like he is not a reference but a job that you did, A reference is not a job, it is just a person to say things about you.

If you worked there, it is to be listed. Have you asked him why he will not give a good reference

Like I said, do a skills resume, so you don't have to highlight this particular job or even list it. Or you can make it generic.

Supposedly, the interviewer doesn't call someone who isn't on your references sheet, but then... that's in a perfect world.

I understand that but I thought references are usually people you worked for and if I put him on my resume and not on my references will I be asked about why I chose not to put him on it? Long story short I just can not trust him he tends to forget most of the things I did for him... went to managers without my permission and talked to them.They did not phone him... he went to them.I have asked him a while ago if he could be a good reference for me he simply said he did not know!

All the people on my reference list are friends or co-workers. I never put a former boss on my reference list, as they're on my resume. But, if the person interviewing wants to call my former employer, the always ask if they can. If I say no, I tell them why.

For instance, right now I'm working and looking for a new job. I'm listing my current employer on my resume, because I want future prospective employers to know that I've been working, not just sitting around picking my nose. But, I don't include the name or number for my employer. When they ask why I simply explain that I'm still employed there, and don't want to be fired because I'm looking for something else.

No. And the interviewer/prospective employer is legally limited in what he can ask in a phone call with a reference. That is why you choose your references carefully because you want them to say positive things about you and your work. A poor reference won't be able to damn you as a worker but can make noises etc. to give a negative impression.

I just thought that they could ask why at an interview I have been asked about it before but towards a co-op and why I did not include the place as a reference!
