How are elements with a greater mass than iron made?

Through fusion of lighter elements, which is thought to occur when a star goes super nova. The explosion scatters the elements into neighboring space, and ultimately these elements may coalesce into new stars and solar systems. Our own solar systen is thoyfght o be "3rd generation," and hence is seeded with heavy elements from earlier times.
