Hi, I am very worried about a problem I am having. I am 15 and I normally have regular periods, lasting to at least 5 days, and I have never had any problems with my periods. Not long ago I had unprotected sexual intercouse, and a few days ago I was around my due date for my period. I was happy as I thought it had come, but I realised it wasn't normal to my other periods. It was brown in colour and was heavy enough on the first day, but the got very light. This has never happened before, and I am very worried! It is now my fourth day of this and it is very light, I really would appreciate some help! Thank you.

Brown discharge usually indicates old blood that your body is flushing out. But, since you've had sex, pregnancy is a possibility, as is an STD.

Have you taken a pregnancy test?

Fact is, you had sex. Pregnancy is possible. My advice is to take a pregnancy test using first morning urine. If it's negative, wait until your next period is due. If you miss it, test again. False negatives are very common, and some women don't get a reliable test until they're in their second trimester, or even later.

If the test is positive, then congrats, you're pregnant.

Worrying about it now is a bit too late. Any time you have sex, even with protection, pregnancy is possible. You had unprotected sex, which means you're trying to conceive.

Why did you have sex if you're not ready to be a mom?

The thing is, you can live and learn, like I did.

Get a pregnancy test, take it. If it's negative, wait until your next period and see what happens.

If it's positive, then we can talk about your options.

Above all, learn from this. I did, when I was a teen. I learned very well. You can too. In fact, you can learn from it far more, because the internet wasn't an option when I was a teen. So, if you're not pregnant, you dodged the bullet, stop and think. Are you ready to be a mom? If not, then stop having sex. That's the only form of birth control that's 100%.

Sorry if I sound harsh. I'm not trying to be. I've been where you are. It's not easy. I lucked out. I hope you do too, and I hope that you learn from this, and make the right choices from here on out.
