    Name change civil union
My civil union partner changed her name through court order because the attorney we hired didn't tell us in NJ it could be easily done with civil union paperwork. I don't want her to erase her past. Is there any way to undo this court order or will she have to go through another court order name change? Needless to say we are very upset with the attorney we paid for.
    Thank you

    AK lawyer
Her name was "X". You got civilly united, but her name remained "X". Then she decided to use another process to change her name to "Y". She now wants to change it back to "X". Is this correct?

I fail to understand how her name change from X to Y is the fault of the attorney. If she had done it in the course of the civil union it would still need to be changed back to X.

Hi Ak Lawyer thank you for responding. Here is the situation. We went to our atty to do powers of atty, advanced directive and asked about name change because we were not sure if civil union paperwork was enough to change passport and social sec. Our arty told us we needed to do a court name change and never said in NJ court order is not necessary for name change. You are correct that we arrived at her taking my name but the issue is she didn't have to have a court order which also includes changing birth certificate as per atty

You are correct that we arrived at her taking my name but the issue is she didn't have to have a court order which also includes changing birth certificate as per atty. If we were advised to do w civil union her original last name would just be maiden name. Now we want to change back to maiden name and request just to have things changed w civil union paper. We are wondering if there is a way to reverse the court order name change to nullify her having to change birth certtificate and lose identity as name she grew up w. in your state do same sex couples have to court order change name?
