OK so I'm not asking for a judgement just facts please. My baby is 8 months old. When I fell pregnant there was a slight chance it could be my ex's, however we only slept together once so I was almost definite he wasn't, and the dates didn't seem quite right... so I put who I thought was the father down I have not discussed my doubts with anyone. However as my son grows I'm worried he looks like my ex I don't want to do the wrong thing by my son but I'm very conscious that I could hurt a lot of people... if I was to get a paternity test to prove the father would it be expensive or difficult to change the name of the father on the birth certificate?

ANY question on law needs to include your general locale as laws vary by area.

Did the person you put down sign an acknowledgment of paternity? Have you gone after him for child support?

There are fairly inexpensive home DNA tests you can do as long as the possible fathers agree to submit a sample.

Depending on where you are, it may be possible to easily amend the certificate while the child is less than a year old.

Thanks for your reply I'm based in the UK? Paternity was never in doubt when the presumed father signed the birth certificate. I'm not wanting child maintenance or anything like that... and neither of the two know that this is a possibility so I would have to break the news and ask for permission of DNA testing but just wanted to get my facts together before I did so...

This is not a "new" problem. At the time this was originally posted the possible violent reaction of the boyfriend was a problem. Is that still a concern?
