I am framing a bathroom in my basement and I have a question about the bathtub stub.

There is about a six inch PVC pipe surrounding the stub and there is dirt filling the six inch pipe between the stub and the pipe wall. The stub and the dirt-filled PVC pipe that surround it is about 12 inches high, I believe the PVC pipe and dirt need to be removed in order to work with the stub and to frame behind it. So my question is this - do I just cut the PVC pipe even with the slab and remove the dirt?

The bottom plate of the wall that will be behind the stub will partially cover the cut PVC pipe - do I need to cover the pipe with cement around the stub Then do I need to cover the space around the stub with cement before fastening the bottom plate to the floor?

I have only seen stubs that have risen out of the slab directly with no outer pipe and dirt... Please help!

It sounds like that instead of cutting a 8 X 8" dap out(see image) in your slab the installer used a piece of PVC. What you have to do is remove the PVC pipe and dig out the soil to find out if there's a "P" trap down there. Do not fill the hole with cement. The dap out is left open. Let me know what you find down there and we'll go from there. Tom

Thank you Tom. I removed the surrounding pipe down to the slab (this was as far as I could go). It was difficult to dig around the stub as there wasn't much space, but I did shine a light down stub and there was standing water. I poured a lot of water down the stub and the water level remained consistent which suggests to me that there would be a p-trap already. I believe to install my standard tub (not above-the-floor-rough-in) I'll need to dig down into the slab to give enough room for the rough-in, correct? At that time I should be able to confirm the P-trap.

I'm assuming for the framing, I'll need to notch out for the PVC that surrounds the stub on the side opposite that I will be cutting into the slab, correct?

Put your mind at rest. You do, indeed, already have a "P" trap installed, Since the tub drain extends a bit below the floor line the raiser will have to be cut back. It doesn't look like you'll have to dig anything out to make the connection. More questions? I'm as close as a click, Tom

Doesn't the riser have to be connected to the tub overflow? And with the tub being flush to the floor, wouldn't I have to extend the dap-out space to accommodate the pipe needed to connect from the riser to the drain? The only way I know to do that is to remove enough of the concrete slab to allow space for the drain pipe to connect from the raiser to the drain... I would love not to have to remove any part of the slab if I can, but I just don't see how in this case.

Please let me know your thoughts.

But the tub isn't flush with the floor, The apron sets on the floor but there's room under then floor of the tub for the tub drain.

No. In fact you'll have tom cut the raiser back a bit to allow the connection.

II don't think you'll have to mess with the slab. However, you nay have to dig doen 3 or 4 inches and cut the large pipe back to make the connection. And here's the connect will be made. A few inches under the floor line. The tub drain pipe will fit inside the raiser that you will already have a PVC compression fitting (see image) glued on. I think that did it Tom. I'm going to dry fit all as I measure for the framing...
