I am renting a condo that was built in the 70's. Almost every electrical outlet in the apartment feels lose. When I pull out a plug, it feels like everything is going to come with it. I removed one of the front plates and it seems like the outlet is just sitting in the wall. I have taped the plate to the wall as a tempt fix. This sure seems dangerous, but I thought I would see if anyone has any actual knowledge. We have a new baby on the way and this just adds to my fear that this could lead to a disaster.

Before you suggest I talk to my landlord, I already have and he simply says its not a problem.

While the outlets are loose, and a general pain in the behind, it is not critical unsafe condition. But, the devices and plates do need to be tight so there is no movement of the device.

There are various spacers and extension rings to allow a device to be tightened properly.

How will this be done, will you attempt this or call in an electrician?

Thanks for the fast response. I guess I would ask your opinion. I would prefer to do it myself if I can manage to do it without cooking myself.

Obviously, shut off the circuit breakers before working on any device.

Here is one type of spacer, used on the supporting screws of a device to give the device a firm tight support when the screws are tightened. There are other types of box extensions, depending on how much space exists.
