A close friend of mine wants 2 adopt my 19yr old daughter he's treated her as his daughter for a number of years. If it goes ahead I've heard that I also have to adopt her is that true? Could anyone advise me please... Thanks x

At 19 your daughter is classified as an ADULT and as such cannot be adopted in the classical meaning.

If the child is already YOUR child you can not adopt your own child, unless you gave up right to them before.

Next a 19 year old is not a child, and does not need to be adopted.

ANY question on law needs to include your general locale as laws vary by area. Some areas permit an adult adoption. Basically though secure a right of inheritance. Other areas don't permit it at all.

What does your daughter or your friend think would be gained by adopting her? Why would you think you have to adopt your own daughter? What does your daughter think about this?

And in most areas is this "friend" living with you. Is this a same sex relationship ( you did not say) that you are in and this is a partner?

In most areas this "friend" will have to be married to you for an adoption and in some a adult cannot be adopted
