Can an employer force a part time employee to open their availability?
Background: Been working for a large retailer for 8 years in California. I'm a part time employee who is only available two days a week because I have a full time job elsewhere. Many employees have these restrictions due to other jobs and school and they are very much aware of this and have never had an issue until now when they seem to be on a firing spree.

I was recently told that I have to open my availability to work at least 4 days a week (4 hours a day) and if I didn't, I would basically have to resign. They know I have a full time job that won't allow me to open up my availability.

Yes, it is bad for them to do, if you are a good worker, but they can demand you work the days they schedule, and if you don't, they can fire you. ** they can not make you resign**

If you have a great work record, perhaps you need to talk to a higher up boss.

Thank you for the reply! My record is impeccable and have never received anything but great reviews. Unfortunately it's the store manager that is demanding the new schedule and the higher ups are in the corporate office which are unreachable.

    Thanks again!
