You get out your check book or mastercard and just pay them for the damages.

You knew that, they have to be paid, if you don't, they sue, get lots of added costs, your drivers license gets suspended till you pay them. All that bad stuff

Tell them that upon receipt of an estimate from a body shop, you will write the other driver a check for that amount. Howerver don't give them the check without a release signed by them. Some people want to see two estimates, and pay the lower one, but that's up to you.
