I came home yesterday and my outside unit was buzzing and fan wasn't working and the top was really hot. I turned it off and tried turning it back on noticing the expansion valve was making a gurgling noise and getting real hot

Glen, what are you calling an expansion valve.
You say the unit was buzzing (loud like compressor running with a bad fan motor or a little buz like the contactor is working? )
