    Recessed light stopped working
Hi, I have four recessed can lights in my kitchen. A few weeks ago, only one stopped working (the other three work fine). I have replaced the bulb with a new one but it still won't work. My kitchen is on the second floor and my bedroom is on the third so I can't get access through an attic. Any suggestions?

Most recess fixtures have a thermal cutout switch inside, if the heat exceeds its rating it shut power off to the socket. These fail and need to be replaced. Access is through the lamp/housing opening at the ceiling. If you remove the trim and lamp, you should see a manufacturers label with make and model number of the fixture. Can you provide this information?

I believe the make is Elite lighting with model #B6PLIC-26-E-AT-W-120.

Looks like your light has a 26 watt compact fluorescent lamp. Make sure you replaced it with a 26w lamp, and not a 32w. If you did use a 26w lamp chances are the ballast is burnt up. The ballast is attached to the cover plate on the splice box. It's going to be a pain to replace but here goes. Shut off the breaker feeding the lights. Remove the 3 screws that hold the can in the frame. With them out you can pull the can down leeaving it attached only by a few wires. From here you can reach in and remove the ballast. It will be white and is attached to the splice box cover. Using a small screwdriver or paperclip, press the tab next to where the wires enter the ballast. That releases the wires. Everything should be color coded so you don't need to mark anything. Replace the ballast and put it all back together.
