My daughter was caught shoplifting in the Macy's store of New Jersey. But the items she stole were in the dressing room the same time I was in there. They also charged me. Will I go to jail?

Not likely if it's your first offense.

Not if it was not 1000s of dollars worth.

But do you want a criminal record ? Making it harder to get jobs and other things?

Hire an attorney first and foremost.

Next do not make any statements without talking to attorney.

Most likely probation, a large fine, court costs and perhaps a civil penalty to the store, plus paying them back for things taken

You will have to be convicted first.

Did you know she was stealing the items at the time she did so? Did you help her do it? If not, it doesn't look like you are guilty of theft.

No ! I would never help my daughter do that but the store is convinced I do know. I was not with her when she stole it , she walked out on her own. I was only with her in the dressing room. Any advice on what to say in court?
