Have tried to remove the c or you shaped clip at top of started on craftman lawn tractor. I did not take it off the engine. Bendix broke off completely. I have a new. Read many clips about a roll pin but I do not have a pin. It is a clip just above bendix to hold ot into place.

There is a special tool to expand it that I find to be one of the worst of the special tools. It can be pried off with some difficulty. It is said to be not reusable. There is a spacial tool to install that I find of limited use. If you can pry it off and then put back on; the cap with the round recess will hold it assembled if fully seated.
