I have a centre lathe which has a 2 horse power, 3 phase motor fitted. The supply to the lathe motor is from a domestic 240 volt wall socket via a phase converter.

I intend to discard the 3 phase motor and fit a 240 volt motor to the lathe. Would a 2 horse power single phase motor be big enough to cope with the lathe?

Also, what exactly would I need for the set-up between the wall socket and the motor?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

2hp is 2hp no matter how you get there. They are the same, it just takes more amperage at the lower voltage. As for what you need... Do you want to hard wire it or plug it in. Also how is it connected now? Does it have a motor starter (stop/start with a contactor and heaters (fuses)?
