Dr Bill, approx. how long until my BAC = 0?
I had approximately 18 drinks last night from 4 pm - 11 pm. I am taking an alcohol swab (a test that measures present BAC) at 6 pm today. How long until I am at BAC zero?

    Thanks,

    TJ

Based on weight and gender your BAC was about .21

The range is 16 hours (based on .013 ph) and 11 hours (based on .019 ph). At that volume of alcohol you probably metabolize nearer the .019 and possibly even faster.

You could be at BAC=0 as soon as 11 hours but no longer than 16 hours.

Any food would also accelerate the clearance time if eaten immediately before, during or after the drinking.

Thanks! When I do BAC calculators on the internet it sometimes tells me there is a chance I still am BAC > 0... are these things just very extreme to keep people from driving or what? Thanks again.

They sure provide conflicting figures. Here is one that I checked against existing data. It calculates elimination at .017 ph which is pretty much on target. However when you obtain a BAC on these you then have to divide by elimination rate, in males that is from .01 to .024. In 99% of cases actual time will fall in that range. Few people metabolize at the lower level and heavy drinkers nearer the high end. But due to individual and situational variability the range should always be considered.

You are saying 11-16 hours after I stopped drinking, correct?

    Thanks

Yes that is based on your approximate BAC at time you stopped drinking, at the end of the 7 hours. Est BAC = .21.
