    Ceiling fans troubleshooting
Everything is wired up but will not work. If the ground wire is loose could this be the cause?

Nope, that won't be the problem. Describe the wires and connections.

OK, you have a black, white and red wire in the ceiling box. Is that all the wires in the ceiling box? Where do thes wires come from?
Are you just installing a ceiling fan/light to existing wiring or did you install the wiring.

    Come on, tell me everything.

    Don't be brief.

In the ceiling box which was prewired by the builder for a ceiling fan there is a black white and red wire along with the ground. N the ceiling fan/light there is a black, white and black wire with a white stripe along with 3 separate ground wires. The switch for the ceiling box is a dual switch, one for the fan one for the light. I am just installing the ceiling fan/light. All the wires to be connected to were already there.

I connected white to white... black to black... black/white to red and the ground wires form the fan unit to the ground wire in the ceiling box... Is that the right configuration? Otherwise I may just have a loose connection somewhere

Yes, those are the correct connections. Don't forget to pullthe chains.

After you have ensured that the fan and light are on by the pull chains you will have to start looking for bad connections. Have you ever had a light or fan installed here previously? If you have previously used a light or fan here and neither the fan or light will work (after puling the chains) look for a bad neutral (white) connection.

Also check to make sure the blade direction switch is UP or Down. If in the middle, will not work. Appears to be wired properly. Ever check for voltage at the switches and fan connection?
