Visit your local animal shelter and ask this question. I've had cats all my life, and if I would get a dog, it would be one from the shelter (save a life!) and probably a lab mix. A small yippy dog wouldn't work at my house.
A good person to talk about this with is Alty who has lived with both cats and dogs for years. In fact, many of the dog experts and owners here also have cats, so stay tuned for more input on this.
All dogs are different, I have had pitties that love cats, and I have had shih tzu's who would try to viciously attack cats. I would suggest getting a young puppy and introducing them slowly, or like WG mentioned, visit your local shelter and adopt one who has already been temperament tested with small animals.
And I have always had cats, it's only been the last 4 years my home has been cat free. I pretend not to like cats, but who can resist the cuddlyness of a new kitty? My dogs are NOT small animla friendly, and I used to do a lot of fosters, so it just wasn't fair to have a cat in wich I would either have to lock the cat up 24/7 or the dogs.
Typically if you get a puppy, they learn to be nice to the kitties.. Mostly because the cats will put the pup in its place.
With so many cats, I'd say go with a small breed dog that isn't a terrier. Terriers are cute, but they were bred to kill small furry things.
