I am planning to relocate my washer and dryer from my kitchen to my patio. There is existing water / drainage pipe from the close bath room and one gas line from the kitchen. Would you please guide me what to do before I ask for the permit from the City. Thanks.

Answer Tom's question, but here is a basic overview for you below:


2" drain in most states

2" cleanout in drain

2" PTrap with cleanout, 30" standpipe out of trap

1.5" vent required...connects into other vents at 42" to center off the floor (invert sanitary tee fitting) or can penetrate the roof by itself 2" in size. You may also be able to use an AAV (mechanical vent), but these are illegal in most states

Gas pipe is usually 1/2" to the dryer, but that depends on what is on the rest of the gas system

Use a 3' flexible gas connector to connect the dryer to the gas line (gas line from dryer is 3/8" and the reducer is usually built into the correctly sized dryer connector)

Install a gas shutoff behind the dryer

Proper electrical required

4" METAL dryer vent required for gas (can be flexible metal dryer vent)

Consider installing a washing pan and, if possible, I'd suggest installing SS braided hoses AND an automatic floodstop shutoff (sensor goes in washing machine pan)

Finally, check with your inspector for local requirements as each city/town/state can differ in many ways!
