Took 1000 from my job and they said if I paid the money back they would drop charges but the state picked it up what do u do? I told the police what happened

It depends on the prosecutor your case gets assigned to, the judge who presides over it, where the case is tried, and whether it is your first offense. That being said, you should get a public defender in order to minimize the consequences. If you live in the U.S. and this is your first offense, you can expect either jail time (not to exceed 6 months), a fine, or both.

First it will go better if it is paid back before court.

You get the best lawyer you can and do a plea agreement, if lucky just probation and fines

OP should get an attorney. Whether OP can qualify for a PD depends.

Jail time? It's probably within the statutory range (if, as Caspi said, it's in the U.S.).

One would need to know the U.S. state to have a more precise idea.

Jail time - I don't see there are any guarantees. Between x days and x days, yes. A definite "Y" days. No. This is employee theft.

In Virginia I am reading $1000 or more is a maximum of 1 year in the penitentiary and/or a $1,000 fine - that's what I was referencing.

I'm not reading not more than 6 months.

Not trying to make it worse than it is, but flat statements without knowing the State - ?

Sorry sisi, JudyKayTee is right, 6 month maximum sentence is only CA.

That would have been my guess. And for a first time offense, absent circumstances making the particular criminal act the worst possible way to commit the crime, one would not expect the maximum.

Agreed - my concern is theft from an employer but, yes, it's a first offense.

Bad enough finding employment will be difficult -
