A monster eats books and thus erases "history" with each book it eats. The protagonist is a teenage boy who notices people and buildings disappearing from his town.

Another thing I remember is that the ending scene takes place in a library in which the boy tries to save the last book from being eaten.

Oh, and the monster (as far as I remember) isn't ever shown. It's just represented by a shadow.
