The school that I go to is hell. Every school is not the same, ask any teen in this generation. I want to transfer schools and live with my aunt and uncle about a half hour away. I know what's in my best interest, and I won't pass my jr. if I don't transfer. If my parents do not allow me to move but my aunt and uncle do, do I have the right to leave? Amelia, I am so sorry you are unhappy. Unfortunately, your aunt and uncle do not have any legal rights here. If your parents say absolutely no, then there is no way around it.

I do have a suggestion before you approach them. Start making a list of all the problems that are going on with you, the school, other kids, all the things that are bothering you. Carry it with you for a week or two and keep adding to it as things occur. When you feel the list is complete, ask your parents if you can have a serious family discussion with them. Tell them that you want to switch schools and with the help of your list, explain why. Make it very clear that you are very unhappy and you don't think you will pass if you are forced to stay. Then ask them if they have any ideas on what can be done. Let them talk and ask you questions. Make sure the discussion is fully and completely over.

THEN, the next morning at breakfast or the next evening at dinner or afterward, tell them you have been thinking about this and you are wondering if it is possible to transfer to the school in the area that your aunt and uncle live. See what they say.

My point in not immediately suggesting you move in with your aunt and uncle is that they really need time to think about the problems that are going on. They are going to need to analyze if the problems are as serious as you believe they are. If you jump in with the idea, they might think you are making this stuff up just so you can get out of the house and will probably say no. Let everything sink in and let them digest it. You never know -- if they think the problems are really serious, they may come up with the idea themselves. That would be the best way to accomplish your goal and, if for some reason, you can't move, at least they are aware that you have a serious problem, and they need to pay attention to it and help you with it.

Legally I don't think you really have any right to just up and leave, because then your parents could say you're a runaway, and you'd just get brought right back. But if you really want to do this, and it really is in your best interest, try sitting down and having a long talk with your parents about it. It would be best if you did a little research yourself beforehand. Make up a list of the pros and cons of each school. Are you wanting to change schools because of the classes or because of the people?
