We can turn on our tractor but if we engage the deck or try and put it in gear the engine cuts off.

This is what is referred to in the business as an "operator presence" problem. Generally it is caused by the seat switch not detecting the presence of the operator on the seat. It is usually the seat switch being faulty or a broken or shorted wire in that circuit.
