I have a 30 in drop in range that is hard wired. The circuit breaker is 30 amps, house built in 1987.
The new range is a slide in and requires 40 amps. I was told I would also need a junction box installed and circuit upgrades.

How many hours are expected for an experienced electrician to do the job?
What degree of difficulty is this?

First up, the new drop-in requires a branch circuit of at least 8-3 w/ground NM romex cabling (thhn in pipe if Chicago code) and a 40 amp breaker at the panel. See 210.19(A)(3)40a minimum for ranges. So giving an answer for bid quote is unlikely, if you can, get a bid contract if possible but T&M will be most likely. And yes, a metal J-box is the correct interface with a hardwired pigtail from a drop-in range. The electrician will need to see your house layout of panelboard location to kitchen range location to give a time estimate for invasive remodel installation time. If the panel is close by and adjacent to the range location, fishing in new cabling and hooking up will amount to less time but quoting how long would be the wiremans call. Good luck NM
