Why won't my 14 year old mix breed eat?
She's a 14 yr old mix of German Shepherd and Novia Scotia Retriever, recently took her to vet because she wasn't eating, they did full work up and thought heartburn at first, but results came back as UTI infection. They have her on Tramadol for her arthritis and Clavamox for the UTI. She'll eat a soft treat or two but has not had a full meal for about 4 days now. Vet says she has fever and feels terrible, not to worry because she won't eat. She's been on the Clavamox for 24 hours and Tramadol for 2 days and still not eating. Very worried.

Sounds like a great looking mix!

    Wow - 14.

My dog loses her appetite whenever she's on Tramadol and so the Vet gives her steroids at the same time.

Will she eat anything? When I was desperate my Vet said not to bother with home cooked foods but to tempt her (of all things) with baby food, the toddler kind (sort of chunky).

I think you need a little more time for her to feel better.

Thank you! Yes, she's beautiful and the most perfect mixed breed dog ever! She does eat a little like noodles or chicken in the evening. Baby food is a good idea. When should I be worried?

I've never been terribly concerned about eating. I lost a dog in April, totally unrelated to anything we're talking about, and she ate like a wolf - would go two or three days without food, started when she was a puppy, so I don't get too concerned.

If your dog's behavior is something new I'd be concerned. Is she drinking? Is she weak or does she appear sick?

    Could it be the heat?

If she's been with you for 14 years you should have that feeling in your gut if something is wrong.

Tramadol did suppress my dog's appetite big time!

Clavamox should be given with food. If she isn't eating, stop giving it and contact your vet right away.

Did she stop eating at the same time the pain pills were given? Or was she not eating in the very beginning?

If the UTI is bad enough, she'll feel pretty crumby and not want to eat.

Baby food does work.. You can also buy canned food, mash it up, heat it up and see if she eats. You also can force feed her by rolling the canned dog food into meatballs and cramming them down her throat. It'd get some type of food into her so that you can address her UTI.

But like I said.. Clavamox has to be given with food. If she's not eating, don't give it! Call your vet! With her fever and pain.. I would think she should be on Rimadyl instead of Tramadol.. Tramadol is just a pure pain pill.. It has nothing in it to suppress a fever...
