Where is the fan motor capacitor for my Trane a/c unit. Mod # BTB736A100A2.
Trane outdoor a/c unit fan motor not turning. Looking for fan motor capacitor to check, but don't see one (only the fan motor and compressor are visible). Do older a/c units not have run/start capacitors?

Usually the capacitors are located in the service access panel on the unit. All single phase compressors have at least one run capacitor and sometimes it is a dual capacitor that also services the condenser fan motor.

    Thanks for the reply.

I know where they normally are. The only panel on the back is where the wiring comes into the unit. You access the unit by removing the top. The fan is attached to the top and the compressor sits at the bottom. There is nothing else there but tubing. There is however a cowling between the edge of the fan blades and the walls of the unit. The wiring runs through this cowling and doesn't look like a capacitor could fit in it. Tomorrow am I will take another look at it to see if the cowling comes off; maybe the capacitor is housed in it. I don't think so, but I'll check it.

Something even more important came up this morning, so I didn't get the chance to take another look at the a/c unit cowling to see if it houses the capacitor. Will try it again in the am.

Looked at the unit again earlier today and could not find a way to get into the cowling. Is anyone familiar with this model # that could let me know if the capacitor is housed in the cowling?
