how do i prevent bacteria buildup in toilet?
I get this greyish black and very smelly bacteria buildup in 1 of 2 toilets in the house. The way the bathrooms are situated, these toilets are within 5 feet of another but only one toilet gets bacteria buildup. We pour bleach into tank, let it sit overnight, and flush it the next morning. The problem resurfaces within 3-4 weeks. Knowing that bleach kills necessary bacteria, we re-treat the septic system with rid-x the next week. What am I doing wrong and how do I correct the situation? Thanks

Did you scrub the tank and bowl with bleach or simply poured the bleach in the tank and hoped? And why in the world did you waste your money on Rid-X in the septic tank for a problem with a toilet? As you can see I'm no fan of septic tank additive. I think they're a rip-off and the ads are based on fear, Good luck, Tom

I've approached this both ways. Used 1 gal bleach, after letting it soak all night, I bowl brushed the tank to remove anything hanging onto tank. Then flushed and let sit in bowl for a bit before flushing all down drain. I've also just poured bleach in tank and let sit overnight before flushing through system. Neither way seems to work better. Approx 2-3 weeks later it returns back to black and stinky! Should I look into replacing this toilet? Thanks
