Residence or Nonresident for tax purpose.
I am a student at Stevens Institute of Technology , Hoboken , NJ.

During 2006, for my academic internship purposes I was in California from 16th May 2006 to 17th Nov 2006 and I had income from that stay in California for which I paid taxes to California.

Does my temporary move changes my residency status to "part year resident" in New Jersey? If "NO" then should I pay taxes to newjersey on my California income too?

Now, I am not sure as per this information, should I file my state taxes as part year resident or full year resident?

    Your help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Nilay:

You are a non-resident of California and a full-year resident of NJ.

NJ will give you a credit for the taxes you paid to California that will offset, dollar-for-dollar, what you owe NJ, so there will be no double taxation.
