I have some new outlets inline on a 20amp breaker the outlets are burning up my chargers plug in meter says they are putting out 120/240 volts what can cause this

Do some read 120 and some 240? The only way you will get 240vac is to have 2 separate lines and that would trip your breaker on a regular outlet.
