A shadow on the brain is not enough information, sorry. Any hollow part of the brain is a shadow on the brain, and we all have some hollows in our brains. The question is, is it new, bigger, or in a spot it shouldn't be? And even knowing all that doesn't tell you what caused it. which could be any number of possibilities. So you have to go back to the doctor who told you this and ask.

I'm reading that shadows on the brain are not uncommon, are part of the aging process.

You must be very worried. Have you asked the Doctor if you should be concerned?
