We just got our dog from the SPCA. She's 8 years old and was raised in a puppy mill. She's been peeing and pooping all over the house. My friend suggested to get a spray bottle and use that on her whenever she goes potty in the house. Do you think that's a good idea?

I hear your frustration, but -- Absolutely not! That would be like animal abuse. She would not connect being sprayed with what she had done. And never rub her nose in any of her messes. She has never been trained and hasn't a clue, so you are going to help her with this.

Was she taken from the puppy mill to the SPCA, no fostering in between? Does the SPCA have someone on staff to help you with this? I do know that confining a dog to a specific area helps.

I'll add that these dogs need homes - often the dogs have problems that have to be worked through.

If you just got her this is all new to her and she doesn't have a clue what you are asking of her, talking about. I would take her out regularly, very regularly, and praise the brains out of her when she "goes" outside. I do not much of anything when my puppy makes a mistake inside (although he currently is housebroken , currently being the operative word here) other than clean it up. I'm sure the lack of attention is boring for him. When he goes outside, wow, praise and good boy and all sorts of enthusiasm. I swear when he's not getting the attention he deserves he goes outside and squeezes out a few drops.

Again - the dog will require extra work but it can be done.
