I filed a mechanics lien on a house of which I am part owner, so I can be paid for improvements I've done. Do I need to follow up with suit in the superior court in a certain time?

Normally that's how mechanic's lien statutes work. You would need to research the mechanic's lien statute in whichever state you are located to make sure you comply with it's provisions.

I am surprised that you can file a ML in your city hall. Normally, recording of liens and such is a county function.
