    Closing off a 1 1/2" elbow
I have a 3" Tee main vertical waste stack, non pressurized. Coming out of the top is a 1 1/2" vent elbow that is showing through the sub floor. I want to seal off the vent so that it is not showing. I am adding another vent. I can't replace the 3" Tee. There is not enough room to cut off the elbow and cap it.

There is enough room too cut the 1 1/2" elbow in half and seal it. "How do I seal a 1 1/2" elbow if I cut it in half?"

The only other option I can see is drilling out the elbow from the 3" Tee, however then how do I seal the top of the Tee?

    Thanks much

What kind of piping are we talking about, PVC? It is very forgiving. Try to get a measurement of the ID and look around for something that fits it. They make plugs and caps. It would be a pain, but if you find something slightly over size, you could grind it down. If you got a nice, square cut, you could slip an oversized cap over it and let the closed end of the cap seal to the end. With any close fit at all, the PVC cement should seal things up. You do want a good seal to keep the sewer gases in.

They also make rubber stoppers that expand when you tighten a bolt. They will be sized to pipe sizes, and may not fit.

So cut the thing off, and tape over it with duct tape. Take the cut off half to Lowe's and look around. Usually at my Lowe's, I can wonder around looking at things, and nobody bothers me.

But you aren't allowed to conceal them, right?

Growler, good question. I don't know. But if someone is going to cut half of an elbow out they are going to need something that will hold. The fernco cap will hold.
