How do you know if the stop is open or shut? Vertical or horizontal?

There are a great many valves, any of these look like yours? Stop Valves by Kohler and Elements of Design at PlumberSurplus.com Does it have a knob or just a blade type handle? Quarter trun or multiple turns?
