Why don't you try and text him first. Send him hi or wats up or something like that. And then just ask questions. Or ask him to meet you somewhere with a bunch of friends or something and try to get to know him better there

Don't they have chat on face book? Get to know him that way, or just ask exchange numbers and ask him to text you.
