Please does anyone recognise this story, and can suggest the book title ?

The central character is a young man from one of the Balkan countries ?Croatia? Who was a submariner in the Austrian Navy in WW1. He tells his story when many years later he is resident in a Rest Home in South Wales. I read the paperback - and subsequently mislaid it - about 20 years ago. In hope, Chris.
