My husband has been court ordered to provide health insurance for our children. We have decided that I am adding everyone to my policy because it's much better than what he had. He does not have their social security numbers and she will not give them to us because I will be the policy holder and she wants to have the primary insurance (she is the youngest so her insurance would be secondary). We have visited our social security office and tried to get a replacement card but because he is not the custodial parent, we are unable to obtain this. If they both signed the order informing both of them that he is to provide insurance, can she legally keep this necessary information from us? I don't understand this because this would technically make him into contempt of court.

I would get his lawyer involved in this, like tomorrow... so at least the court is going to be aware of what's going on...

And yes generally the Insurance company needs that to positively identify an individual... so multiple people don't try to share an ID.

Do you have a letter from the insurance carrier that you have tried to cover his child? If not, get one. Then have your husband submit it to court and ask the court to either force the mother to provide the SSN or release your husband from the requirement.

Have you actually checked with the carrier that they will cover your step child? Since you have no legal relation to the child and she does not reside in your household they may not allow her to be covered.

I looked into coverage earlier this year before we were married and they gave me the time frame I would need to turn in the information by (30 days from the wedding date). As of now, I do not have a letter from them but that can be easily obtained. Legally, we are not the custodial parents, however, the children are with us every weekend and randomly during some weeks too. I am not sure if that makes a difference to them as far as residing goes.

You have to check with the carrier about that.

First sorry but as for as getting a copy of the social security card, you "talked" too much and told them too much, you apply for a replacement card, fill in all the details and don't explain anything else.

Next how about looking at previous years tax returns when he and his ex were together, they would have the kids social security numbers.
