    f1 student status tax information
    Hi everybody,

My name is Vinay Mandora. I came to USA in August on F1 visa. I want to file my federal state tax return but I am not able to find any software which provides help in preparing federal tax return.

    1) Can tuition and student fees be claimed as deduction?

    2) What is amount of standard deduction and personal exemption me?

    3) Is any software like turbo tax can be used for preparing tax return?

    Thanks

    Vinay:

    1) No. Such deductions as NO allowed for international students who file as non-resident aliens.

    2) The personal exemption is $3,300. Unless you are from India, you are NOT entitled to claim the $5,150 standard deduction. You may be eligible for a tax treaty exemption, depending on your home country.

    3) No. Neither TurboTax nor any other popular tax software addressed preparation of Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ.
