For my house I draw water from a drilled well however the pressure isn't enough to water my garden or my lawn. Thankfully we are waterfront on a small lake. I'd like to buy an additional pump set it up in the boathouse; run one end with a foot valve out into the lake. Will I need to have a pressure tank or can I attach the other end of the pump directly to a garden hose? And if I am able to attach directly what's my bet for a type of pump? Would a sump pump work? Ideally I'd like not to have to spend an enormous amount of money just to water my garden.

If you fail to install a bladder tank your pump will run every time you make a draw. A bladder tank extends the life of your pump. Any 1/2 horse shallow well pump should do the trick. Good luck, Tom

But unless I have a really large tank, my pump will cycle anyway since the only time the pump will be on is when I water.

I agree, as soon as the tank is empty the pump will run continiously. Suggest you purchase an irrigation or lawn sprinkler type pump. No tank necessary.

But that's assuming the That once the tanks empty all the volume will be directed out to the garden discharge. If the OP installs sprinkler heads that will disperse less volume the pump puts out the tank will fill up and give the pump a rest. In my area we install bladder tanks on all our sprinkler systems. Lovely! Thanks! We used to have an inground sprinkler system when we lived in the city so have just phoned our prior contractor to see about prices.
