I began smelling sewer gas in my bathroom and was told to check the wax ring, so I did and yes it needed replacing, so I followed instructions, replaced it, and still smell the sewer gas. Thinking I did something wrong (4 TIMES) I replaced it again and again, because the smell would not go away. Then I asked the person instructing me to come out and replace the wax ring himself. He originally installed the toilet and there was never any problems until now. So he did, and he doubled the wax rings, and then caulked around the bottom of the toilet. All to no avail. The sewer gas is stronger than ever. I don't know what else to do. Any suggestions?

Did anyone bother to check the condition of the subflooring under the toilet?

I bet there is rot there and the toilet is allowed to move enough to prevent a long lasting seal because of that. There should be absolutely ZERO movement...

And that is likely because if that seal failed before then water was getting out too.

Your nose is the best detective. If the smell's worse at the toilet then I agree with Smoothy. Good luck, Tom
