Sounds a lot like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the 1977 movie that (along with the earlier Jaws) establish Steven Spielberg as the wunderkind director.
The central communication between the humans and the aliens is a series of five notes.

The movie starred Richard Dreyfuss, Melinda Dillon, Bob Balaban and the late Francois Truffault, the tremendous French director whom Spielberg idolized.

Sounds like Close Encounters of the Third Kind where they use a melody to communicate with aliens that culminates in a big encounter at Devils Tower. But I would think anyone you would talk to about this would come up with the same answer.
