I am purchasing a house with a sump pump. In two different corners of the basement I found holes. One the size of a half dollar, one about 3-4 inches diameter. It was pouring rain and through the little hole we could see water flowing (we believe to the sump pump) the larger hole opposite the room had water in it, but was not moving. Does anyone firstly know why someone would basically hammer through their floor to make these holes? Do you think they are part of a perimeter drain system and the larger one is clogged? (maybe clay pipes) house built in 1969. Water does not come up onto the floor (as of yet) so do you think I could close them up (patch them)? It's baffling!

Just a hole in the concrete and not a pipe fitting, right? Any water marks on the wall or floor?

Just the concrete no visible pipes. On a dry day when I poked down there which a thin metal pole I found, I felt dirt/sandy consistency. Musty basement, a tiny bit of mold on the only drywalled wall. Effervescence on low parts of some walls. No clear water marks on the floor, and they do have a washer and dryer on the floor, not on blocks. (same as gas boiler and HWH)
