It started with a guy and gal in love, but the mother of the guy didn't like the girl. They got into a car accident and the girl was in need of a lot of facial surgurys. The mother of the guy paid for the surgurys if she would go the other side of the United States to have all of this work done. She let her son believe the girl died in the accident. She was an artist and the eventually met up again because he regonized her paintings.
