How do expansion tanks work in a closed hot water heating system
They maintain a constant pressure in the system by compensating for heat expansion and contraction of the water. If you don't have one, every time the system went cold the pressure would drop the feeder would bring the water up to preset pressure and when the system reheated the relief valve would pop.
