Help water hammer waking me up
I live in a condominium which I rent. At 4:30 AM I am stirred out of sleep due to what sounds like someone beating on the wall. My father suggested it could be water hammering. I think he is right. Can a device be installed in my unit to stop this awful noise or does have to be installed in the unit causing the problem or perhaps even somewhere else in the piping that serves this building? I am so confused and don't know how to attempt to get help. I have to get the owners to specifically help or the condo association. So far I have not resolved it. I have lived here about 10 days and still bam, bam, bam on the wall.

It must be in another unit if you are not using water. Put the HOA on notice about the issue.

Does your condo have a boiler for hot water baseboard heat? When my boiler is low on water, the pipes get air in them and the bam bam bam can wake me up. Happens this late in spring on unusually cold mornings. After flushing the pipes and adding the proper amount of water to the boiler, I can sleep in happily.

I agree with ma0651, this is the responsibility of your landlord.

Actually it's the responsibility of the condo board to track down and eliminate the problem. If your building was built after the 70's we installed air chambers ( shock absorbers ) on the hot and cold supplies in the kitchen and on each vanity. These can be recharged very easy. If your maintenance men need instructions just click on back. But first they must locate the unit causing the problem. Good luck, Tom

Thanks!! I have notified them but right now there seems to be an argument that because they don't hear it and no one else is complaining they can't help. My husband is going to attempt to get the bickering to an end and have the problem fixed. Thanks so much for replying.
    Sincerely,
    Mary
