I am having a 36,000 BTU split system installed. This unit is 230/208v with 30 amp breaker. Instead of using the pull out style or lever style disconnects, would it be safe to use a 30 amp 120/277v a/c double pole toggle switch mounted in a appropriate weather proof box as my disconnect?

I will say no, better to use the pull out style. The switch you are proposing must be listed as a motor-circuit switch, rated in horsepower, and several other qualifying criteria that mostly it is not, as per NEC Section 440.109 (A) (1).

Thank you very much for responding. Yes, it is a motor-circuit switch. It is a industrial grade double pole grounding switch useed for motor operated equipment,water heaters, pumps etc. Here is a link to this switch. Please tell me what you think.

Looks like your all set, I checked the Cooper site, and found this switch is rated for 2 HP or 24 amps, so your good to go.

That switch is probably around $20, plus a box to put it in, plus a cover.
A pull-out is around $10 complete, plus less labor to install.

What could your motive possibly be to use the switch??
