How long does a parent have to be gone before it is abandonment?
In Georgia the normal abandonment is not paying court ordered child support, not being gone.
Once the parent is gone, the other parent files for custody, using abandonment as the reason, and gets a court order for child support. Once they have the court order for child support, most GA counties will consider charges if they are about two months behind in support payments.
** other counties will not do it that soon.
