How does a 240 volt thermostat work
I have 240 volt baseboard heaters, I would like to up grade the antique thermostats. I checked the voltage at the thermostat and the wires were each 120 volts to ground. I checked voltage between the two wires and it was 240 volts. There are two termanals on the thermostat with one of these wires connected to each, no othe wire conections. How does this work, and what do I ask for at the hardware store. Thanks for the help!

Sorry your post got missed. Still need help? If the stat only has two terminals, it is a single pole unit controlling a 240 volt circuit. It is allowed by Code, I am not a proponent of it.

The other two wires. Line and load, must be spliced together.

Preferably, ask for a double pole stat. My preference. If they only have single pole, then replace and connect the same as existing.

    Hope this helps.
