My 7 year old cat is in labour but since the first thing came out she hasn't given birth and its been over 24 hours now I didn't know she was pregnant but can't see movement in her stomach its not that big I think there maybe only one in there,what's the longest time before the first kitten comes as I'm worrying now
Please get her spayed after this! A cat that old shouldn't be having kittens.
There may be only one kitten. Has she had kittens in the past?
No I only had her a year and he said she had been done already,how long is the longest labour please
If she is fixed I think that's what you mean by being done already then how is she pregnant. Anyway if it's been that long between births I doubt if there will be anymore.

A cat can stop labor for 24 hours or more if she is bothered or is uncomfortable for some reason. When did she have the first one?
Im not stupid I know now she hasn't been spayed,that first mucus thing came out yesterday afternoon and she hasn't had one yet she slept under my duvet all last night she isn't in any distress I'm staying up with her for a second night so I can help if needs be I ran round getting all the stuff today,and of course I am going to get her spayed after this I just wanted to know what is the longest time known between the mucous lump coming out and the birth of a first kitten please
It could be quite a while if you don't leave her alone. Is she staying in one place or is she restless? The less you do and the less you watch her, the better off she will be. It could be a while yet before the first kitten shows up. I suggest you go to bed and sleep tonight.Quote:

Just let her be. She will have her kittens when she's ready. A vet can't tell you more than that. And she will choose her own place to have the kittens. Please don't stress her out by shutting her up somewhere that you think is a good labor and delivery place. She may not agree with you.
You know you say leave her alone but where ever I go she follows,then you try saying I'm shutting her away I tried that once as I have a child and thought she might like the peace,and you make out like I'm putting her off if she didn't want to lay next to me she wouldn't!
No, no, no -- that's not what I mean at all. The urge to help a very pregnant cat is strong, especially in us mothers. I just don't want you to worry about her. She will be fine.

Since the laboring of cats can differ greatly I have heard different expert advice. Some say the first stage of labor when losing the mucus plug should last no more than 24 hours and any thing after that call the vet. Then I've heard other experts say if a week has passed since the mucus plug is lost the mama cat is still in a safety zone. I never did see my mama cat’s mucus plug and she might have lost it downstairs or in the garage. She also had her 2 kittens within 5 minutes apart. She immediately after the first kitten was born started tearing and ripping the membrane from the kitten’s face. She also ate everything, placenta and all. I didn’t know this was going to happen and she was quick about it.
Second stage labor should last anywhere from 5 minutes to one hour, but then I’ve heard of interruption labor and it can take 24 hours or so between the birth one kitten to another kitten. Mainly, if it appears she is having complications, call your vet, such as hard pushing and straining for more than 20 minutes with no kitten being delivered, straining for 10 minutes if a fetus or a fluid filled bubble is visible in the birth canal, sudden discharge of bright red blood or fever.
Your mama cat should be quite capable of giving birth without assistance, but be prepared just in case yet taking a backseat and not to interfere in the birthing process unless a problem occurs.
Some things you want to have handy are paper towels, a bottle of isopropyl alcohol, scissors (in case you have to cut the cords), and a soft face cloth to clean the kitten's face if mama does not do it immediately. Take care of you too and let us know how many kittens she had. All we can do is advise as we are not there, she’s your baby so you do what you think and believe is best for her and her babies. I’m hoping all will be well.
